Winter School of Ukrainian Studies in Tübingen

From February 10 to 14, 2025, the German city of Tübingen hosted the Winter School of Ukrainian Studies, co-organized by Doctor of Philological Sciences, Professor of the Department of Germanic Philology and Translation of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology Mariia Ivanytska.

Thirty participants from Germany, Poland, Austria, Switzerland, and Sweden—including professors, students, researchers, and translators—engaged in intensive Ukrainian language studies at three levels, as well as discussions, workshops, lectures, and presentations.

The program featured unique masterclasses in embroidery, Ukrainian singing, and Petrykivka painting, allowing participants not only to acquire new skills but also to immerse themselves in Ukrainian traditions.

Evening events, open to the public, attracted a full house:

  • A literary meeting with writer Marianna Kiyanovska and her translator Claudia Dathe.
  • A discussion with historian Andrii Portnov on key aspects of Ukrainian history and contemporary issues.

A heartfelt thank you to the Department of Slavic Studies at the University of Tübingen (Slavisches Seminar Tübingen), especially Prof. Shammi Shaghadate and Dr. Olena Saikovska, for the opportunity to promote the Ukrainian language, culture, and history.

Here is one of the participant’s impressions:

“After returning home, I want to thank you for the lessons and the materials you sent… The Ukrainian language lessons you conducted exceeded my expectations. I am very happy that I could take part in these meetings. P.S.: My little dream is to find time to calmly and thoroughly deepen my knowledge of the Ukrainian language. From the bottom of my heart, I wish you all the best. J. Ż.”

Thank you to everyone who participated in this event. See you next time.
