The European University Association (EUA)

The European University Association (EUA) represents more than 870 universities and national rectors’ conferences in 49 European countries. EUA plays a crucial role in the Bologna Process and in influencing EU policies on higher education, research and innovation. Through continuous interaction with a range of other European and international organisations, EUA ensures that the independent voice of European universities is heard.

EUA provides unrivalled opportunities for members to share best practices by participating in projects, events and other mutual-learning activities involving a wide range of universities. The Association also provides members with unique opportunities to shape European policies and initiatives affecting higher education and research.

Universities in Europe and around the world are crucial to global sustainable development. Therefore, the Association supports the worldwide agenda for achieving the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Universities contribute to the goals through research and education in a wide array of disciplines that can potentially contribute to a better future.

EUA supports its members in the achievement of the SDGs through advocacy and project work and serves as member of SDG Watch Europe. EUA also recognises the importance of the SDGs in its Strategic Plan.

The Baltic University Programme

The Baltic University Programme (BUP) is a lively network of about 100 universities located in 10 countries of the Baltic Sea Water Catchment Area. It started in 1991 as an enthusiastic effort to bridge the information divide left by the Iron Curtain and has been growing ever since. Thirty years of a fruitful cooperation later, the BUP and its mission can hardly be more topical: a sustainable development of the Baltic Sea Region.

See the list of participating universities at the link.

The BUP supports cooperation among researchers, teachers, and students from the participating universities, but extends as well to international offices and other university bodies. It also assists university leaderships in strategic issues related to internationalisation. As they share similar experiences and face similar challenges – global as well as specific to the region – the participants actively pool their knowledge and find innovative ways of promoting and implementing sustainability in their region.

The Baltic University Programme strives to find novel ways of interaction among universities and between universities and society. The main aim is to enhance strong regional educational and research communities but also to foster a greater awareness of the Programme’s focus areas. The BUP focuses on questions of sustainable development, environmental protection, and democracy in the Baltic Sea Region. They support the key role that universities play in a democratic, peaceful, and sustainable development.

The Programme’s aim is achieved by being an open and inclusive organisation, developing and offering university courses, trainings, and conferences, supporting multi- and interdisciplinary research co-operations, and by participating in transdisciplinary projects in cooperation with authorities, municipalities, and others. The network offers research themes intended as a source of information where BUP colleagues both collect and submit material with a hope that this will lead to more visibility and co-operation among researchers, teachers, and students.
