KIU is now accepting applications for its PhD program in Interdisciplinary Ukrainian Studies!
The KIU Graduate Programme is the first structured PhD programme in Germany focused on Ukrainian studies. It offers up to 15 early-career researchers from various disciplines the opportunity to conduct intensive research on aspects of Ukraine’s history, culture, society, state, and conflict.
The programme will take place at the European University Viadrina, located on the German-Polish border, in collaboration with leading research institutions in Berlin. Join a vibrant academic community as part of the effort to strengthen Ukrainian Studies in Europe and beyond.
Programme Focus:
The PhD programme addresses key themes like Resilience, Restoration, and Transformation through disciplines such as History, Literature, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, Peace and Conflict Studies, and Digital Studies. Scholars will explore Ukraine’s complex historical, political, and cultural dimensions and their global relevance.
Scholarships Available:
- 9 fully funded PhD scholarships
- 6 positions for associated doctoral students who bring their own funding
Duration: 36 months, starting April 2025.
Monthly stipend: €1,300 for scholarship holders.
Working language: English. Basic knowledge of Ukrainian is required or expected to be acquired during the PhD.
How to Apply:
Interested candidates should apply online through the KIU application portal by 9 February 2025, 23:59 CET. Registration opens on December 15, 2024. Scholarships are only available to non-German nationals, but positions for associated doctoral students are open to all applicants.

- Cover letter(max. 700 words) addressing:
- Motivation for researching Ukraine
- How the programme will support your professional development
- Your contribution to the programme
- For associated students: How you’ll finance your doctorate
- PhD project summary(max. 350 words), including:
- Discipline and thematic corridor
- Proposed thesis supervisor (from the KIU list)
4.Research exposé(max. 10 pages), covering:
- Research question, methodology, state of research
- Challenges of researching Ukraine (e.g., travel restrictions, war)
- Timeframe and publication plans
- Letter of recommendationfrom a university teacher familiar with your Ukraine-related research
- University degree certificate(Master’s or equivalent)
Applications will be reviewed by an international committee. Selected candidates will be invited to online interviews on February 17-19, 2025.
