Uppsala University Visiting Researcher Programme 2026

Uppsala University announces the call for applications for the Visiting Researcher Program 2026. The program offers a one-month research fellowship at IRES (Institute for Russian and Eurasian Studies), including travel, accommodation and a stipend of 20 000 SEK. Full access to IRES premises and Uppsala University library resources is provided throughout the research period. The current round of applications offers two individual fellowships. The research visit of one month must take place within the calendar months of February, March, April, May, September, October or November, 2026. The fellowship always starts on the first day of each month.

About IRES

IRES is a center of excellence on the post-Soviet sphere at Uppsala University. The Institute conducts world-leading research in an open and dynamic environment that is truly cross-disciplinary and international. Among the academic staff are scholars in fields such as, but not limited to, political science, economics, law, history, literature, philosophy, anthropology, sociology, and geography.

Selection criteria

IRES encourages applications from highly qualified and motivated researchers at both junior and senior levels. Applicants are required to hold a PhD degree or the equivalent. The applicant’s research focus must relate to the ongoing research conducted at IRES. In processing the applications, the Selection Committee will consider the applicant’s academic background, scholarly achievements and publication record, as well as the quality and relevance of his/her research proposal to IRES’ research environment.

If you currently are a PhD student you may apply if you intend to defend your thesis before the start of the visit.

This year IRES will especially consider applications withing the following themes:

  1. A) Security & insecurity, threats & vulnerability
  2. B) Imperial/colonial power & resistance/decolonization
  3. C) Illiberalism, anti-liberalism, postliberalism, authoritarianism
  4. D) Resources, resource conflict & human-nature interactions

Application

Applicants should submit a research proposal and CV via an online form. The research proposal is to outline the research project that the applicant will pursue while at IRES. The proposal should clearly explain how a research visit at IRES would benefit the applicant’s research agenda, including details on planned activities to be carried out during the visit (i.e. archival work, interviews etc.). The application should include preliminary dates for the research visit.

Please kindly note that all incoming guest researchers are required to deliver a presentation on some aspect of their research at an IRES research seminar.

– a research proposal and CV

– dates of the research visit

– a draft title and a short summary of the planned presentation
