From 8 to 18 July 2024, Ukrainian law students of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv underwent a traineeship at the summer school ‘Introduction to German and EU Law’ which took place in three cities: Bonn, Strasbourg and Brussels.

Nine students from the Educational and Scientific Institute of Law and the Educational and Scientific Institute of International Relations were involved in the event. The summer school became possible due to the assistance of the German Foundation for International Legal Cooperation/Deutsche Stiftung für internationale rechtliche Zusammenarbeit e.V. (IRZ).
The participants gained theoretical and practical knowledge of German law, EU law and the significant role of diverse European legal institutions. The programme was comprehensive and engaging, including meetings with experts and lectures by prominent lawyers and legal scholars. Lectures focused on topics such as ‘The State and Constitutional Law’, ‘The Judicial Structure in Germany’, ‘Fundamentals of German Criminal Procedure Law’ etc.

Besides the lectures, the students visited major European institutions, courts and authorities. The visits to EU institutions such as the European Parliament, European Commission and Council of the EU were remarkable for their extent and significance. During the visit to the Bonn Regional Court, students were involved in court sessions, which allowed them to see the practical application of legal theories. An outstanding experience was gained during a visit to the European Commission and the European Council in Brussels, where students were astonished by the efficiency of court proceedings and respect for all participants in the process.

The students were able to communicate with representatives of institutions on the strategy of implementing EU legal norms. The visit to the University of Bonn allowed them to delve into the educational atmosphere of the German university and encouraged them to continue their academic studies.

The summer school not only enhanced academic knowledge, but also stimulated students to further professional development. Gained experience will be a powerful incentive to adapt Ukrainian legislation to EU standards. This helps us to gain a deeper understanding of the legal aspects of Ukraine’s European integration, and highlights the changes that are coming, the goals we should strive for, and the results we want to achieve.
