The presentation of the book of translations by Ukrainian young poets – students of the Institute of Philology “Tiny Flames: Voices From Ukraine”

On March 20, 2024, the presentation of the book of translations by young Ukrainian poets, students of the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology “Tiny Flames: Voices From Ukraine” took place.

The event connected participants from Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv and the University of Edinburgh in the form of a videoconference with the opportunity to join for those willing to participate online. This is a joint project of the Department of History of Ukrainian Literature, Theory of Literature and Literary Art, the Department of Foreign Literature and the Department of Theory and Practice of English Translation in collaboration with the University of Edinburgh (School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures, University of Edinburgh).

Voices from Ukraine echoed across thousands of kilometers in poetic translations which became a valuable contribution to supporting our struggle on the way to victory, an important step towards wartime Ukraine being heard by others while becoming closer and understandable to the world.

“It is important for us to be recognised in the world. We want to be seen and heard. The project proves that these voices can be persuasive and at the same time poetic and lyrical,” said the Head of the Department of Foreign Literature, Professor Lilia Miroshnychenko. She added: “It was initially developed as a student project on the initiative of Alice Eaves, a Master student at the University of Edinburgh at the time. Then it became something more than that and ended up as a book. For each of the project participants, it was a truly unique experience that can be used in the future.”

Young poets and translators from the Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology together with students of education programme “Writing Mastery” worked on a perfect version of translation in a creative laboratory. Who are these talented young people? We are proud to call their names (in the following order: author – translator – editor): Antin Ishchuk – Anastasiia Kachanova – Alice Eaves; Lilia Chernenko – Kate Furman – Raine Bracken; Bohdan Bratus – Yurii Popovych – Olivia Thomakos; Oleksii Dolgulov – Kateryna Hoshovska – C.T Hilton; Julia Gupaliuk – Viktoria Marunina – Salvor Solnes. The design and layout were also done by students which once again proves how well-rounded and complete the students of powerful educational centres around the world are. During the virtual presentation of the book, which was attended by more than 50 participants, poetic works were performed by authors and in English translations.

It is extremely important that during the presentation there was a charitable fundraising for the public organisation “Territory of Women” which takes care of the current needs of women on the front of the Russian-Ukrainian war.  Anastasiia Troy Marianchuk, a graduate of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, Educational and Scientific Institute of Philology, a specialist on Japan Studies, was among the military servicewomen. She gave her life for Ukraine a few days ago.
