Webinar on Urban heat islands – mitigation strategies and environmental simulations

Dear teachers and students of Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv!

We invite you to join the webinar on Urban heat islands – mitigation strategies and environmental simulations.

Discover how addressing the urban heat island effect through innovative strategies can improve comfort, well-being, and building performance in our cities on 19 September 2025 at 15:00 Kyiv time.

Lecturers

Gianni Bartoli, Full Professor of Construction Technology and Director of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (DICEA) at the University of Florence

Cecilia Ciacci, Researcher in Construction Technology at the University of Florence

About this webinar

After a brief overview of global initiatives addressing climate change and related actions, the lecture will introduce the concept of the urban heat island (UHI) phenomenon and examine its primary causes in connection with current research trends. A range of mitigation strategies at both urban and building scales will be presented and evaluated through environmental simulations conducted in historical urban districts. The analysis will then focus on the advantages for outdoor comfort and well-being, as well as the benefits for building performance under operational conditions, which will be assessed and discussed in detail. Join us on 19 September 2025 at 2:00-3:00 PM CET.

About the series: New European Bauhaus meets EUniWell – Rethinking Sustainable Universities, Cities, and Rural Areas

The New European Bauhaus (NEB) is an initiative launched by the European Commission to integrate sustainability, inclusion, and aesthetics in the reshaping of living spaces. Its vision aligns closely with EUniWell’s commitment to well-being, as sustainability and well-being are deeply interconnected: green campuses support mental health, sustainable food systems advance equity, and human-centred urban planning strengthens community engagement.

This webinar series aims to connect the two initiatives by exploring how universities can implement NEB principles to create healthier, greener, and more inclusive spaces. However, this transformation should not be limited to campuses. Universities play a crucial role as civic institutions, supporting sustainable transitions in urban and rural areas by collaborating with municipalities, local communities, and policymakers. By engaging in civic university initiatives, higher education institutions can become active partners in shaping more liveable cities and thriving rural regions. Through these webinars, we aim to engage students, faculty, municipal leaders, and experts in reimagining universities as hubs of innovation that contribute to the sustainable development of their wider regions, in full alignment with the NEB’s vision.
