International online event ‘Teaching and researching for a just transition: Preparing for a more sustainable future’

Kingston University, in partnership with UNC Charlotte, London Metropolitan University, Malmö University, and other universities, is hosting a hybrid two-day event focused on integrating sustainability into teaching, research related to education, and community partnerships. This event is free and open to both KNU teachers and students for online participation.
Dates: 21st-22nd May 2025
Format: online, either as a presenter or listener
The university community is invited to share its sustainability experiences and learn from others as participants develop a stronger network of faculty, staff, and students thinking about different aspects of sustainability.
About the event
It is a chance to share what different faculty and universities are doing around sustainability in teaching and research. The event is organised in a hybrid model with an opportunity for KNU faculty and students to join online.
Abstract Submission
Coordinators invite submissions for short papers and lightning talks. Participants are encouraged to submit individual or collaborative abstracts of up to 250 words by March 14 for presentations that can be from 5 to 15 minutes. From these, colleagues will be invited to present around themes that emerge from submissions.
- Short papers are likely to follow traditional conference presentation format, though submissions offeringopportunities for interaction are also welcome. These should be limited to 15 minutes. Dedicated paper sessions, organised by theme, will be followed with time for questions and discussion.
- Lightning talks should be limited to 5 minutes and no more than 5 slides (or equivalent). Lightning talks offer afantastic opportunity to share new ideas, capture insights gained, generate hallway conversation, and receive helpful feedback.
Deadlines
- March 14, 2025: abstracts should be submitted via online form
- April 11, 2025: notifications about presentations emailed to participants
- May 11, 2025: registration deadline for all participants (free registration) via online form
Provisional program
May 21, 4-7 pm (Kyiv time): panels and papers discussing examples of sustainability efforts that connect to classrooms and/or community partners.
May 22, 4-7 pm (Kyiv time): The second day will focus on one or more “hackathons” that bring community sustainability issues into practice. Starting with a toolkit developed by Kingston University, teams (online) will collaborate to develop ideas and plans for addressing specific sustainability challenges, with time to present ideas. This experience will hopefully show the value of a hackathon model for sustainability efforts and help refine the existing toolkit, which will also be shared with participants.
