FINANCIAL INFORMATION
As part of the Erasmus program, students receive a monthly living allowance of 900 euros, as well as a lump-sum travel allowance of 395 euros. The scholarship is paid out in two installments: 70 percent approximately four weeks after the start of the stay (provided a German bank account has been opened and a German tax ID has been obtained) and the remaining 30 percent a few weeks before the end of the stay.
It is therefore essential to ensure that your students have sufficient personal funds before entering Germany to cover the following initial costs:
- Costs for obtaining a visa (costs can occur for translations of official documents, travel health insurance, travel to the next German embassy, etc.)
- Costs for the flight and travel to Germany
- Security deposit for accommodation (usually equivalent to two months’ rent) as well as the cost of the first two months’ rent, totaling approximately 900–1,200 euros, payable to the future landlord
- Semester fee for enrollment at FAU, currently 82 EUR
- Sufficient funds (1,000 EUR to 2.000 EUR are recommended) to cover living expenses for the first month until the scholarship payment is credited to the German bank account
It’s also important to know that rent for housing in student residences must be paid for a full semester, i.e., at least through the end of August. If a student’s last academic activity takes place in July, the Erasmus scholarship can only be calculated up to that date; however, rent must still be paid through August, even if the student moves out in July. Overall, however, living in student halls of residence is still less expensive than living in private apartments (which are generally unfurnished).
Please make sure to explain all these financial aspects to your students in order to avoid false and unrealistic expectations that will only lead to disappointment.
